Townsville artists take stage in Melbourne

Townsville artists Nick Hoops and Steve Maguire have been selected to participate in the Fifty Squared Art Prize at Melbourne’s Brunswick Street Gallery.

The exhibition is an open call art prize featuring works no larger than 50 x 50cm.

Featuring over 500 artworks by artists of all experience levels and styles, the exhibition starts tomorrow, Thursday 3 January and closes on 24 January. Winners will be announced on 11 January 2019.

Located in the heart of Fitzroy, one of Melbourne’s most creative suburbs, the Brunswick Gallery hosts regular exhibition openings and cultural events throughout the year.

Nick Hoops has five pieces in the exhibition including “100 Years” which he painted on Armistice Day 2018, commemorating 100 years since the end of WWI.

A Sergeant Major in the Australian Defence Force, Nick’s painting is a nod to the ADF’s proud history and his career which has spanned nearly 20 years.

Steve Maguire’s has two entries titled “Pressure” (pictured) and “At the Ball”.  Steve is an ex-Defence member who now works in the disability sector. He uses colour and emotion to make a connection with his audience.
